Gavin & Stacey charity single reaches #1

The single recorded by Gavin & Stacey stars Ruth Jones and Rob Brydon, in character as Nessa and Bryn, for Comic Relief has hit #1 in the UK.

In series 2 of Gavin & Stacey, Nessa + Bryn perform “Islands in the Stream,” the classic Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers duet at a barn dance. The popularity of the song drove the charity recording.

Fellow Gavin & Stacey actor James Corden also did a bit for Comic Relief in character – Smithy dressed down the England football squad.

Gavin & Stacey Stars Record Hit

Ruth Jones and Rob Brydon, who play Nessa and Bryn on the hit comedy Gavin & Stacey, have recorded a version of Dolly Parton + Kenny Rogers iconic classic “Islands in the Stream” for charity.

The duo, with the help of Tom Jones and Robin Gibb, preformed the number in Las Vegas as part of the Red Nose Day. The performance, now dubbed “Barry Islands in the Stream” in reference to Nessa + Bryn’s home down, will be released 8 Mar.

The Real Homes of Gavin & Stacey

Seems not everyone is thrilled with the runaway success of Gavin & Stacey.

The real-life owners of the homes used in the show face some very real-life annoyances from tourists angling to get a peep at the famous cribs.

The Mirror reports that living in the home of the Shipmans is a bit rougher than living in the home of the Wests.

But, as The Mail reports, the son of one of the victims of the real-life Shipman isn’t impressed with the show either.

We suppose it turns out the answer to the question Doris (Stacey’s neighbor) asked at her wedding – which is better, Shipman or West – just so happens to be West.

Casting Suggestion – US Smithy

We’ve heard for a few months now that Gavin & Stacey was headed to NBC for a The Office – style remake. James Corden himself has hinted that he thinks Philip Seymour Hoffman would be a good choice to play his character in the American version. While we are also fans of Mr. Hoffman’s work, we’ve stumbled upon another suggestion: Tyler Labine.

Perhaps not as well known as Hoffman, Mr. Labine is busy making a name for himself by starring in The CW show Reaper (which turns out is quite entertaining, if not a bit formulaic; fans of Dead Like Me will feel right at home).

Labine fits the role physically, is roughly the same age as Corden, and his character in Reaper isn’t a far cry from Smithy. In fact you might even be able to exchange the two and only notice the changing accent.

We for one, are the first to cast our vote in a “Draft Tyler” movement to get Labine a part in the US version of a great show.

Entertaining Mr. Sloane – An Invitation

Fans of James Corden might also be fans of his comic-mate Mat Horne.

The duo have hosted Big Brother’s Big Mouth together and starred as best mates in Gavin & Stacey. They are also developing a new sketch comedy show together, due out in early 2009.

If you need to get your Horne fix early (or via another venue) he is starring across Imelda Staunton in Entertaining Mr. Sloane.

Turns out, Gavin & Stacey has sparked a revival in the Vale of Glamorgan town.

Joanna Page on “Lily Allen and Friends”

This is a bit off topic, but given James Corden’s interesting interview with Lily Allen a few weeks back, we thought it worth mentioning.

Fellow Gavin & Stacey star Joanna Page (Stacey) is scheduled to make an appearance on Allen’s program tomorrow (3/25) at 10:30 on BBC. If you miss it, certainly it should be available to UK residents for the next seven days via BBC iPlayer.

Our question, and reason for posting, is this: Will Allen talk to Page about Corden’s romantic overtures?

We’ll post what we know, when we know it.
